Could a fat person beat a karate student?

just curious cuz one of my friends said karate wouldnt help in a street fight and i took offense to tthis.|||depends|||I dont think being fat has anything to do with winning or losing a no rules street fight. I%26#039;ve seen plenty of %26quot;black belts%26quot; lose a street fight. But at the same time I%26#039;ve seen %26quot;black belts%26quot; beat guys who are bigger than them. The street setting is a lot different from a karate dojo 1) no mats 2) no gi 3) there can be rocks and various objects that can be used in the street 4) no biting in a dojo 5) no groin punches in the dojo 6) nobody hits their absolute hardest in a dojo 7) no eye gouging in a dojo 8) no finger breaking in a dojo...and the list goes on. It%26#039;s true that a person who is taking karate may have the advantage in learning where to hit, how to punch more efficiently, joint locks etc. But this is a very, very , very slight advantage. Unless your timing is good and you%26#039;ve had experience in real fights, I think the odds are pretty even. I%26#039;m not saying taking karate is bad because it%26#039;s not, its good for physical fitness, discipline and knowlege. I take martial arts myself but isn%26#039;t part of martial arts to have a clear mind and to control your emotions so stuff like this won%26#039;t bother you. That being said, it only takes a few clean hits to beat a person in a fight black belt or not.|||It depends on what martial arts experience the fat person has. Size doesn%26#039;t matter with martial arts. I%26#039;ve seen fat people in Tae Kwon Do do flying kicks across the room about 5 ft. off the ground. Just because someone is fat doesn%26#039;t mean they can%26#039;t fight. If they don%26#039;t have any martial arts experience, then the Karateka will have they advantage. NEVER underestimate your opponent.|||Shihan J is right, I don%26#039;t see what weight or size has to do with anything. There are people in my dojo that are short and fat yet they are better than the blackbelts that are fast and flexible. This is because the black belt doesn%26#039;t know their stuff and cannot defend themselves properly.|||Well being a karate student doesn%26#039;t 100% mean karate competence, it would be better to see what level of belt that person obtained. As far as street fights go, many people say this because they believe fighting dirty will always be an advantage but they fail to understand how good discipline can counter such dirty tactics.|||what does weight have to do with the out come.

i%26#039;ve see heavy people that were very good street fighters.

all because you take karate doesn%26#039;t mean you can fight.

and all because you dont study karate doesn%26#039;t mean you cant fight.

never underestimate your opponent.

edit you think fat people can%26#039;t fight, try fighting someone that does sumo professional and see what happens to you|||Yes, but a karate person could also beat a fat person. Generalizations don%26#039;t win fights, disciplined, prepared fighters do.|||all the fat person has to do is grab the karate guy and bearhug him, slam him down to the ground and sit on him. Lights out for karate boy!|||It will if you%26#039;re good enough.|||If you%26#039;re good enough.|||could a fat person be a karate student?
