Why is Karate and other martial arts so popular when they dont work?

I read in Soldier of Fortune magazine, that black belts are killed by street thugs in a fight, because they don%26#039;t teach you how to kill in Karate school.|||They do work!!!

You just need to train in a bonafide style/club that covers not only the sporting aspects but street situations also.

Whilst training.. what you put in,you get out,all martial arts are tools, its what you personally can implement and use that counts.

Best wishes :)***|||I%26#039;ve been trying to figure that out for a while. They don%26#039;t work because many of the moves are next to useless (open palm striking, Kicks with the ball of the foot, and the open headed stances) and the lack of a ground game. The same goes for kung fu and most other traditional arts. I think they%26#039;re popular because they have been around for so long and and the fact that Karate was learned by a lot of shoulders over seas in WWII and they brought it back with them helped it. Also there was %26quot;The Karate Kid%26quot; movies (which by the way didn%26#039;t have too much real Karate in them). The biggest thing would have to be a snow balling effect. the more people learn Karate they more people are hyping it up and they more people things it%26#039;s good and start learning.|||Don%26#039;t believe everything you read especially in Soldier of Fortune. Not only that but I don%26#039;t know what schools and instructors they are referring to but I know several that I have trained and studied with that the military hired to help develop their hand-to-hand combat training courses back in the early 70s. The FBI training facility in Quantico, VA also has had input from several instructors over the years to upgrade their programs as well. The State Department also employs some people in and at its embassies in foreign countries for their skill besides the US Marine contingent at each that is tasked with the security for the grounds and facility they are assigned to. I will agree with you that a black-belt that got his rank only after two or three years of training in some watered down program is not very capable. Not every school fits into that category or turns out that inferior type of black-belt.|||Hmm...let%26#039;s see. I have been training Karate as my primary art for 31 years and have defended myself against many thugs including ones that tried to stab me and pulled a gun out...and guess what...I am still here BECAUSE of my Karate. I have worked as correctional officer, trained police officers and was body guard for several years and I can tell without a doubt that martial arts training is the primary, if not the only reason, that I am still alive today.

Any martial art will work if the person is trained effectively and guess what...thousands of innocent people are killed in the street by thugs each year...and a few of them may or may not be black belts in any system from Karate to Judo to BJJ to MMA. If someone wants you dead they will just walk up and shot you...not show you the gun but just do it. That is a fact. It happens all the time which is very sad. There is no training, be it martial arts, military or whatever than can prepare anyone for an attack of that nature.

There are also thousands of stories of martial arts trained people all over the world that used their skills to successfully defend themselves....so your argument is null and void.

Now that being said, martial arts are not just about fighting. That is a small part of the purpose of training. They are popular because the build the balanced person that is not so simple minded they believe that self defense and fighting are the same thing...they are not.

This has been debated on Yahoo Answers many times and all the people that have actual combat experience, street fight experience and are REAL martial artists constantly prove these types of statements to be false. Why don%26#039;t you go into a martial arts school and train so you can have a real education on them. Then you will get a real idea of why they are so great and important to have in your life.|||It always amazes me how gullible people are...... They read something in a rag magazine, and suddenly it become the truth. Same thing with other sources. People will come on here and state what they believe to be facts because they saw it in Youtube (LOL), or their friend that studies a martial art at the local McDojo says so.

Lets set this straight. First what you read is based on non facts. By that I mean that they can%26#039;t be proven simply because there is on logical way to impartially gather enough real statistics to come to that conclusion. Even if it were possible to get this information, how much training and from what source would be required before the subjects would be considered qualified black belts?

As nwohioguy stated there are lots of stories that have appeared of real situations where people trained in martial arts have defended themselves in muggings, rapes, ...etc. Not all were even black belts.

Your statement also does not consider that people are (for the most part) intelligent. If the martial arts did not really work, would millions of people study them for self defense?

If the martial arts did not work why and how could they possibly have survived for hundreds(in some cases thousands)of years? Were and are all of the martial arts masters just that ignorant?

Like nwohioguy, I too have trained for many, many years. During those years I%26#039;ve also had to defend myself from attack several times. Fortunately I have never been seriously injured, due to my training.

As for the link you posted, I have not bothered to view it. The question alone was so un-founded that I saw no reason to bother with viewing the video too.|||yes many black belts are killed by street thugs the thug has the advantage of surprise this allows them preparation time and weapon access also not many martial artists are trained to perform their techniques under the frightened mindset of a person attacked randomly mostly the reason is to access the mindset for that in order to train you would have to simulate that fear/anger state this is why if a martial artist can survive one such attack they will have a much higher chance if it ever happens again. The thug(read as attacker) more often than not has been the victim at one point or another. The end point I am getting at is this more often than not if the black belt gets killed in this manner why were they in a situation like that in the first place most likely they had no business in those places in the first place BUT STILL THEY WORK THEY MAKE THE DISADVANTAGES LESS BY DOING SO THEIR TIME WAS NOT WASTED UNLESS THEY DID NOT TRAIN EFFICIENTLY|||It%26#039;s not so much that they don%26#039;t train to kill as much as it is their mentality.

A lot of people get a black belt and suddenly have this false sense of security, and walk around like they%26#039;re invincible. The problem lies in their training. They don%26#039;t hit and take hits, and they don%26#039;t train for a self-defense/street fight situation, they train to fight in tournaments. Those kinds of black belts let it all go to their head and then try to act tough in the real world. It never ends well for them.

But not all BB%26#039;s are like that, of course. I%26#039;ve met some Karate BB%26#039;s and TKD BB%26#039;s that would kick the absolute **** out of 9/10 people you%26#039;d find on the street.|||If a black belt dies its not because karate didn%26#039;t work for him. It would all depend on who the master that is teaching you. And karate isn%26#039;t about learning how to kill someone its about learning how to defend yourself and your family. And if a person is a trained black belt that is killed by some street thug who knows nothing about fighting then they must have had a bad master. Or maybe the black belt freaked and didn%26#039;t know what it would be like in a real life situation.|||Martial arts do work. In the streets depending on the situation different forms become more practical, though none really work when there are guns involved (except for military martial arts in very specific situations). I%26#039;ve taken some Karate and I was taught it from an instructor that focused his class on self defense he not only taught us how to disarm/disable an attacker but also how and where to strike for lethal purposes if necessary. Other schools purely are for sport karate which is just useless because you%26#039;re training to fight in a rules governed fight which will never happen in the streets. Also don%26#039;t believe much of what you read in soldier of fortune.|||Stupid black belts get killed.

There is a difference between a good black belt and a stupid black belt.

A good, smart black belt knows his or her limits. They are also trained and train much more intensely, therefore are much harder to take on on a fight. Trust me, I have taken martial arts for a while. I have gone against the stupid black belts who keep their guard down because they think they are invincible. Then I end up knocking their *** to the ground with one side kick to the stomach.

The tougher ones, damn, they are something else. Like robots. I went to spar against one, and like right when the action potential to contract my arm into a punch registered in the muscle, my *** was on the ground.

Stupid black belts think they are the **** just because they have a black belt. They end up letting their guard down and end up with a face full of lead pipe.

Even if martial arts was ineffective (which would make absolutely no sense as it%26#039;s been around for thousands of years), people would still do it for the workout and discipline.|||they work if their taught the right way. It depends on how their taught. There are far too many schools now thats just intereasted in training athletes for competitions. black belts in those schools dont know how to fight with no rules. Take a look at someone that got their black belt in the 70s or 80s, or earlier. I didnt think karate had that problem but i know Tae Kwon do does.|||let me tell you they DO work

I was 14 at the time and stupid for going to the mall alone at 6:00 tthis dude grabbed my wrist and I did a series of movments I learned from a woman%26#039;s self defence kata (tai sabaki shodan) and ran screaming away- and im alive typing this.

edit: I knos some moves with done right could kill or severely injure an opnnent. Why kill when i can disarm. My teacher stresses getting away with the least possible damage.|||Well, martial arts does work, but a if you really want to be specific, try filipino martial arts, type in that on youtube, they don%26#039;t play around when someone tries to weapon kill them.|||Stop reading SOF. It%26#039;s for wankers who were too afraid to join the military but still want to pretend they%26#039;re some kind of mercenary or something. You know Dale Gribble from King of the Hill? That%26#039;s the kind of man who reads SOF.|||Because they are trying to get you to buy:

http://www.targetfocustraining.com/tft_u...

and you are a fool if you buy it... but even though you didn%26#039;t buy it, you still bought the hype, making you a fool either way.|||http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEv6i-lhI...

SHUT UP NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!|||it doesn%26#039;t work because karate is a sport, tae kwon do is a sport. jiu jitsu is a sport. BUT you never hear about a black belt in kung fu san soo getting killed on the streets. check out kung fu san soo and then hit me back up.
