What fighting skills does karate teach?

Also to be a black belt are you a good fighter?|||Beware the answers that tell you Karate teaches nothing (especially if that person studies Aikido).

There are many styles and variations of Karate. But all will teach you how to punch, kick and block. Most styles will teach small joint manipulation, throws, chokes and weapons.

Your question is a hard question to fully answer. Karate varies so much that it is possible to get into a school that will concentrate so much on showing you %26quot;moves%26quot; that make you LOOK like you know what you are doing. When in all actuality you learn very little in the way of good fighting technique. I personally believe that if you get into a good Karate school, regardless of style, it will benefit you greatly if you have little to no martial arts training.

As far as being a good fighter if you are a black belt....the answer is, you SHOULD be. Some people like to bash the black belts of this world by saying, %26quot;black belts mean nothing%26quot;. Those bashers may be absolutely right as holding a black belt doesn%26#039;t guarantee a thing. Just as having a college education doesn%26#039;t guarantee that you are smart. But chances are, if you have EARNED your black belt, you are a better fighter than most. It all depends on what you do with the teachings that you were given.|||Traditional martial arts do not teach fighting skills, period. They fall back on the fighting is wrong and we teach for defense only. Kata is what karate will teach you. There is a massive gap between a fighter and a martial arts. Martial arts are for people who want to get exercise and have a babysitter for their children. A fighter is a skilled individual in the ways of real and true self defense. As far as Belts, even the Black belt, it dosent make you a fighter. Most Black Belts wouldn%26#039;t know how to fight if their life depended on it, but they could do a really cool looking kata. Again, Traditional martial arts and a Fighter are worlds apart.|||you dont mention style of karate, shotokan does not equip you for the street, kyokushinkai does or any original okinawan style taught by a competant sensei.black belt means nothing, you have aquired the basic skills only.spread your wings and try and fill the gaps in your system .look and if astute/emotionally mature enough you will find.|||go to a karate school and find out firsthand you can%26#039;t learn martial arts off the Internet|||I would say avoidance, and avoidance and in case you missed it avoidance - it gives you the confidence to understand yourself and deal with those aggressive feelings therefore not get into a fight in the first place. Okay its not in line with what you asked but hope it helps|||Chinese kempo, which is what karate is derived from, uses a lot of open handed techniques and follow up striking. There is also some simple leg sweeps.

To be a black belt does not mean you are good fighter. A black belt is just someone who%26#039;s completed all the tests and training required.

Its a rank like any other rank and typically the last in the series. There are black belt levels, yes, but there typically is no more receiving of belts after the black belt. You are essentially at the top.|||It teaches mainly striking skills.

To be a black belt means you%26#039;ve mastered all the basics, and are a good karateka

Martial artist does not mean fighter.

To be a good fighter, you must train, and spar alot.

good luck!|||Karate is out dated martial arts. you should train in Brazilian Jiujitsu. or Mauy Thai. If you have a black belt you are a good fighter compare to people that dont train. But compare to other martial artist is different.
