I play basketball quite often and i want to take a gym class next year. I am deciding between karate or tae kwon do. which will be better for flexibility and leg stregnth or other traits needed for basketball?|||i think that tae kwon do would be the best because it is a martial art that deals with leg strength and leg conditioning in my opinion.|||Karate could help you but most schools focus more on power and self-defense then doing jumping kicks . i suggest you do TaeKwonDo most schools in it emphasis on Flying kicks and flexibility, and allot of them have a healthy sports aspect to them|||I am a 3rd degree black belt in Unified Tae Kwon-Do (UTKD), recognised by both the International Tae Kwon Do Federation and the World Tae Kwon Do Federation (ITF and WTF, respectively) and have personally trained with one of the co-founders of UTKD. I have 11 years of experience, 8 of which I taught. In those years I became quite flexible, which is a feat for me, because as a bigger guy (five foot 9, 200 lbs) I was able to almost do the splits at the height of my training (almost an inch from the ground which is freakin amazing to see a big guy almost do the splits).
Along with stretching, we did a lot of cardio, plus strength training including pushups and situps and flying kicks (doesnt sound like strength training but its ownderful for the legs -sounds like it would be good for your basketball training).
All in all, I would highly recommend this sport for you. And who knows, you may end up liking it.|||For basketball specific, I%26#039;d have to say TKD.
TKD has way more %26quot;jumping kicks%26quot; and %26quot;high kicks%26quot; than karate does.
Sometimes TKD classes just jump as high as you can for 10 to 20 minutes, rotating from 180 degrees to 540 degrees while your in the air. While these skills may not be the most practical for self defense, they can definitely translate to basketball.
Nothing against karate, it%26#039;s a great martial art, but for basketball, I%26#039;d have to say TKD is your best bet.

How do I clean crayon stains from my son's karate uniform?
Use a warm iron with 4 layers of paper towel between the cloth and the fabric. Do this 3 or 4 times, then use the steam iron directly on the remaining stain.. Steam will float the remaining wax to the surface. Just keep rubbing your iron over a dry paper towel after each pass over the fabric. After 8 or 10 passes with the steam, there should be no more color left in the fabric. If any remains, alternate between vinegar and ammonia to remove remaining color. Bleach will not dissolve wax, and it might damage the fabric.|||iron it so the wax melts, then scrub with a mixture of vinegar and water.|||Hi,

I was at a dining establishment and I tried to karate chop through what I thought was a wooden board.?
It turns out it was steel with a piece of wood grained wallpaper on it. My question is, do I have any legal recourse against them for my injured hand? Is boxing a better form of combat than karate?
I did full contact karate at a fairly advanced level I am a 2nd dan kyu kushin kai black belt holder. I%26#039;ve fought other martial artists including muay thai fighters who are probably the best strickers after boxers, tai kwando honestly is the lamest art invented and just a big show, there isnt a single tkd middle weight fighter i cant take on. I now do boxing though the only downside to boxing are the bloody blows to the head a practioner takes but it only takes one good punch to drop the toughest opponent. A good example is Chuck Lidell, he enters the ring and wastes no time with the fancy kicks,he goes straight for the head with them punches and boy do they drop. Boxing and grappling arts I think are more effective than karate what do you think?|||IMO Boxing and TKD are sport fighting styles and have far too many rules that apply to them. In all these UFC and other tournaments, many techniques that would be used by a MA wether a striker or grappler are not allowed in these even brutal full contact matches for they are lethal and deadly or cause permanent injury. Example, its a very short distance to throw a side kick or front kick at anothers knee (against it, not with it) ankle, or punches to the throat and neck or armpits. Some things just are not allowed so on the street it is much differant than even in the UFC style matches.
YOu KNOW in a match, your opponent has no weapons and their is a referee to stop the match in case of injury or submission. On the street you do not have the option to submit usually until they are done beating you and usually most have some form of weapon. SO over all in real life I still would prefer Martial Arts over strictly boxing. I do think it is good to learn boxing as Bruce Lee did and implement its form within MA, any good MA will adapt any good things from another fighting style be it a sport or not.
To me todays martial artists are mainly mixed MA and already have basic boxing and grappling added to their styles. Only real traditional styles never focus on leaving their boxes to learn what else is out there, not to say you cannot be traditional and modern at the same time, but many cannot make the transition well.
KIcks take more energy and usualy longer to throw than a punch. Watch Bruce Lee fight he uses alot of Jabs like a boxer and side kicks to the knee and shins like a jab as well. So it is better to use short quick kicks than large powerful kicks or fancy ones like TKD.|||I agree too a well placed punch from a boxer will KO anyone, striking is definately necessary and boxing teaches that well, but only that. Every martial art has a couple of good qualities which can offer you an advantage in certain situations. the experienced martial artist is proficient in using these qualities to their full advantage. E.g. boxing is indeed a sport that relies on fast and close action whilst karate is better at mid range distance. If you encounter a karateka who can really work his feet chances are you probably won%26#039;t get near enough to ever put a punch on him. No telling what you%26#039;d have to pull if you ever encounter someone with a weapon which really increases your range significantly. They each have their own unique advantages. However, in order to be able to defend yourself in all situations against all opponents, you need well rounded skills. Karate works speed, flex, reflex, and coordination. Boxing trains cardio, power, and movement. If you are able to take elements from each style and combine them, you will be far better off. What is the proper way to execute a karate chop?
Just wondering.|||A knife-hand strike is a strong technique in karate. More popularly known as a %26#039;karate chop,%26#039; the knife-hand is powerful enough to knock out an attacker.
Steps:
1. Open your hand with your fingers extended and touching together.
2. Arch the hand backward, forcing the palm side of the knuckles forward.
3. Fold the thumb into the palm, bending the top of the thumb downward.
4. Curve the tips of your fingers in slightly while keeping the hand arched backward.
5. Move your striking hand, palm up, near the opposite-side shoulder.
6. Strike across your body, straightening your elbow as you go.
7. Twist your wrist immediately before contact, so that the palm faces down. The padded edge below the pinky is the striking surface.
8. Keep your other hand as a fist at your side. Pull back on this hand in the opposite direction of your strike to gain power.|||lethal injection|||HANGING BY THE WRIST UNTIL DEAD.

Best way to take care of my new karate uniform?
I just got a new one from my school (we all have to wear the same one) and I want to make sure it doesn%26#039;t get wrinkled or anything. Last time, it did. =/
So how do I hang it up without wrinkling it?|||well if you have a lightweight take it out of the dryer right after its done and iron it and then get a hanger, but the jacket on in and fold the pants and put them on the inside if that makes any sense...and then just hang it. it should hold.
if you have a heavyweight when you take it out of the washer, shake it really hard a couple times and do the same when you get it out of the dryer. dont know how but that works and you get a cool crease on the side of your pants that looks like you pressed them.
to keep it from getting wrinkled if you dont wash it everytime fold it without wrinkles. but if its a light weight its gona be really hard to keep it from wrinkling.|||Well, it%26#039;s almost impossible for your Karate-gi doesn%26#039;t get wrinkled because of the nature of the activity. I%26#039;ve been practicing Karate for about 22 years and I%26#039;ve learned this fact. However, you could minimise it%26#039;s wrinkling by washing it by hand and ironing it after it dries. If you can%26#039;t wash it by hand, try to use the iron to smooth it up. After ironing it you could use a hanger to avoid it%26#039;s wrinkling.
Finally, you shouldn%26#039;t be too worried about wrinkling it during your trainning. Go ahead, let it wrinkle, get dirty, tear up, etc. You have to concentrate on learning, not on your uniform. I know that it%26#039;s hard, but try your best not to worry too much about it.

How much does it cost to go to karate school and do you exercise there or just fight?
Cost - depends on the area. US average is between $100-150/month. In my area, the average is about $75...
Anyone can train in the martial arts, not just kids. I know a woman who started training at 60....
What you call your instructor is up to him/her. If they want you to call them sensei or sir or instructor or master... they%26#039;ll tell you up front. And, no, your instructor does not have to be asian.|||It depends on the school. Every Teacher is different and charges different amounts. The practice will mainly be comprised of different stances, then working on your kicks, punches, and holds, and then eventually you%26#039;ll fight another student (which is called sparring). Some schools may have weights.
If your wanting to study martial arts, but also do some weights, my suggestion would be to get into kick boxing.|||Usually it is around $50 a month. I%26#039;m kind of sick of karate, but it is kind of cool to know how to defend yourself, if someone ever attacks you, or chokes you. I%26#039;m in my 40%26#039;s and have been training in MA for over 15 yrs and still from time to time I get hip pain. Your body just has to adjust to it. A couple of tips that may help are to make sure you warm up very well before you start class. Raising your core temperture is very important prior to stretching. It%26#039;s also possible that you may be over doing it to start. If thats the case, just ease up a little bit till your body gets used to it. Also you may want to consider taking a supplement called Glucosamin / Condroitin with MSM. This supplement is for keeping all your joints healthy. Takes about 2 months to build up in your system, but it will help with the pain. Also make sure to get proper rest in between your training sessions. When you get past 30, your joints start to weaken a little. The
elastic that stretches with the movements can get a little crikey and you will have lost some of your range of motion.
Chances are that you are a little overweight also which is hard
on your joints.
The pain you feel is probably from inflammation of the joints, not just sore muscles.

Three ways to keep joints in shape:
1. Keep the weight off
2. Warm ups
3. Exercise the muscles surrounding the joint, build them up so they will support your upper body properly thereby relieving
the hip joints of all the burden.
Warm up really good before you do anything. Then after your
lesson, take 3 Ibuprofen (4 if you need to, but not more than 8 per day or 20 in a week--always with food). Walk it out also-

What can karate or tae kwan do classes help you with?
Im thinking of thaking one of those classes.|||Balance, coordination, increased flexibility are three things that immediately come to mind. I have had a number of students including athletes in other sports, weight lifters, as well as just the everyday housewifes or office workers join for the purpose of increasing their level of fitness in those areas. Obviously there are also the added benefits of learning some self-defense while at the same time doing something to work out other than the more traditional things that many people do but some have become bored with.
The most important aspects though are the mental ones-especially for younger children and teens. A good program in either of these two arts will develop self-confidence and self-esteem as well as self-discipline. It can also help adults get stronger in these areas as well if they did not develop these traits as they were growing up. How do i develop faster punches for karate sparring and real fighting?

Is karate-chopping a little screaming baby in the throat appropriate etiquette in a quiet restaurant ?
Before you get all bent out of shape people.. Please tell me how do you handle a little baby screaming bloody murder in a nice quiet restaurant for the duration of your whole lunch? Yes, I mean if it%26#039;s mom is not bright or polite enough to take it outside?|||I would ask the waitress or manager to go over and ask the lady if she would mind taking the baby outside and calming it down. Or perhaps the manager could offer his/her office to the mother if she needed to feed/change the baby. You could also go over and say, %26quot;I know I can%26#039;t expect your baby to know that it%26#039;s in a restaurant, but I%26#039;m having a meeting/nice dinner(or whatever it is you%26#039;re doing) and would really appreciate some quiet.%26quot; Try and come off as being understanding (it%26#039;s not easy to persuade a baby to stop crying when it%26#039;s determined to do so, unless it needs food or something). OR if you%26#039;re in the position to do so, you could offer to pay for for the ladies lunch and ask if she would mind taking it to go. It%26#039;s not that I have anything against mothers or babies(as I have a little boy), but I would never allow him to scream uncontrollably for an entire meal in a restaurant, fancy or not! If you(or whoever confronts her) is understanding and nice about it, I%26#039;m Sure she%26#039;ll understand--unless she%26#039;s a complete *****, in which case, you%26#039;re better off getting YOUR lunch to go. Good Luck!
Also, it%26#039;s not like people would stand for it if a little kid was running around yelling, or some really drunk person was shouting and swearing, best bet is to ask the manager to deal with it.|||Been on both ends and I can say I am sorry for your experience. What can I do about "preferential treatment" at the karate school?
Sensei withheld my belt promotion b/c I wouldn%26#039;t lose a few pounds. So I stopped training. I needed time to think about how I wanted to proceed. I loved karate and still do. In the meantime, I found out that the (married) sensei had TWO girlfriends in the school. I%26#039;d suspected it for a while, but it was confirmed. It was fishy how they had moved up the ranks very quickly.
Then the school had the nerve to say they wanted me to come back and keep training. In other words, they wanted me to keep spending my 1000s of $$$ yet not advance at all.
His explanation was that weight was only an issue b/c I put it on the little card you had to fill out as a newbie. I then said that if it%26#039;s clear I%26#039;m not losing the weight (although I tried) and I don%26#039;t want it to be a requirement for my next belt, could he reconsider? He said he%26#039;d think about it.
Uh, hello?! So I quit! Can I sue the school for something? Anything? What recourse do I have?|||Define %26quot;a few pounds%26quot;.
The card thing, though, makes me suspicious that either you or your sensei is confused. Depending on some other factors at the school it could mean they have very high standards indeed, or that they are the classic McDojo.
In any case, if we%26#039;re talking 10-15 pounds it%26#039;s kind of an unreasonable requirement. If it%26#039;s more than that, well, you%26#039;re not going to lose that all at once, but your weight presents a danger to you and possibly fellow students. In that case it%26#039;s reasonable for him to require some weight loss for a promotion.
The girlfriends thing, though, is kind of an overriding issue in my mind. Run, don%26#039;t walk, to another dojo. You probably could sue and you might even win, but it%26#039;s not worth the aggravation you will undoubtedly incur.
My guess is that the other schools in the area are probably aware of the problem and you might even find one willing cut you a break on early training requirements if you can demonstrate that you actually were (and are!) ready for that promotion you didn%26#039;t get.|||Ok, karate schools are completely unregulated. If I wanted to, I could easily start my own without any approval from anyone. Now, I can%26#039;t use someone else%26#039;s name for my school, but I could make up Cat Kwon Do, the fighting style of the feline. Charge like crazy and make up whatever rules I want. What does this have to do with you? Well, it means that whoever is running this school does not have to answer to anyone about how they run things (as long as they stay in agreement with anyone who may have franchised it to them).
The refusal of giving you your belt based on your weight might seem like weight discrimination, but it can easily be argued that the school has certain expectations of fitness to gain levels. Since this is a sport, that excuse can fly. Discriminating against you because you aren%26#039;t a girlfriend is not against the law in this case. You are not an employee and this case does not include sexual advances against you or your refusal to have sex.
You could sue this person, but don%26#039;t expect to win. In fact if you did, expect a countersuit that you might lose. In any case a lawsuit will just cost you a lot of money. Walk away, find a better place. You could always find out if this person franchised his school thru someone and contact that someone and tell them of what happened. I would doubt you would get far with that too. Of the karate schools I have seen, the only thing that got the owner in trouble was if they could not pay the fees involved for running the place.
Also, this person does not seem to be too knowledgeable about fitness and weightloss. A person can become fitter and not lose weight. They can even become smaller and not lose weight. Did he ever give you a fitness evaluation with body percentages? Probably not.|||The best action is to save you time and energy on the hate. Meditate on this subject...
What is the outcome you really wish for:
Is it for your training to continue in a productive manner, or
for your treacherous sensei to suffer for his evil ways.
(notice the lowercase letters in sensei)
If you are worried about money what good will it do you to give some to a Lawyer.
Why don%26#039;t you continue your studies at a Dojo where you fell welcome, and improve your skill without feeling like the beaten market dog...

Good Luck.|||Sifu says that sashes (our kung fu version of the belt) are there to only hold up the pants. Ranking doesn%26#039;t signify skill. I told my son not to worry about who is advancing in rank. Concentrate on the techniques being learned and perfect them. If in your mind you think you have more skill than someone of higher rank, then be satisfied with that. Anyway, my 12 y.o. son outranks most of the instructors but he did it by perseverance.
My brother and sister studied Tang Soo Do were the master took on a student girlfriend. Needless to say, it is not respectable to be wearing an undeserved belt.
If you are learning some good stuff at the school, then just ignore it. If the school teaches junk, time to move on.|||The only real recourse you have is to take your business elsewhere. Competition in martial arts schools is pretty fierce, there are MANY schools and only so many students.
I went through a school that was very quick to promote people. Just about everyone was promoted to Black belt within 3-4 years. I am a Black belt more because I %26#039;stuck it out%26#039; rather than my level of skill or capability. In the end, I wish my progress had been slower so I could take time to properly learn what I was doing. But, since you pay more when you have a higher belt, they want you to get to those higher belts soon.
So, my general comment to you is, don%26#039;t measure success by belt color. I have known several black belts (even some with 2nd and 3rd degrees) that did not have the skills to justify their belt. Take your time, enjoy what you are doing, and find a school where you are happier.|||Can you sue... probably, but you%26#039;ll probably loose and won%26#039;t do anything except cost yourself a lot of time and money that won%26#039;t gain you a thing.
Some teachers use weight as an indicator of what kind of shape a student is in. I use what the student can do. I have one student who is not very flexible, but is very strong, another who isn%26#039;t very strong, but is very flexible. Watching them spar is a thing to behold. They%26#039;re about the same height, but the one who is stronger is almost twice the weight. He%26#039;s very good, but I%26#039;d love to be able to work with him more on his speed and flexibility.

You could try telling his wife, if you%26#039;re on speaking terms with her, but I%26#039;m betting she knows. You could also try telling them about each other, but I%26#039;m betting they know. You have to ask yourself what you%26#039;re there to learn. Are you there just to learn Martial Arts? Then what does his fidelity or lack thereof have to do with it? Are you there to learn morality? Then leave! Go somewhere they can teach you that. I%26#039;m married, and my only girlfriend is my wife, and she doesn%26#039;t take classes, so I have no girlfriends in class, so not all teachers are like this. I honestly don%26#039;t know which is more common, though, those like me, or those like him, since a Martial Arts instructor is a position of power and as the old saying goes, power corrupts.
You spent your money there, good for you to realize that. But news flash, the money you spent was for the training, not for the promotion. It%26#039;s the same thing with any kind of school. If you go to a dance school, you pay money to learn to dance, and they teach you, but they don%26#039;t promise you%26#039;ll rank at the next ballroom competition. If you go to college, you pay to go, but they don%26#039;t promise you you%26#039;ll pass your classes and get a degree. Paying for class is different than paying for promotion. Other things you%26#039;ve said have bothered me about your school, but at least the promotions aren%26#039;t for sale.|||Did he specify on acontract of any kind you had to meet certain weight requirments? if so you signed a legally binding document and cant sue for anything.|||Go to a different dojo, and stop worrying about what color your belt is.|||Don%26#039;t go to a school for a belt. The reality is if you just want a Black Belt just buy one. It should cost about $3-$4. Your biggest concern should be am I learning what I want to learn. I study in two different styles ( Which will not be mentioned because I don%26#039;t want to make an arrogant claim that one is better than another ) My first style has never given me any problems with belt promotions. I have received my ranks after I put in the time and earn it. In the second style I train I am bypassed for promotions although I can defeat my opponents with higher ranks. I don%26#039;t care because I am learning what I want. To make it worse I have a lifetime membership there, so the heck if I am quiting.
Uh, hello?!
What is the MAJOR differences between Karate and Kung Fu?
I don%26#039;t mean which do you prefer. I just want to learn the difference in the two martial arts.|||Country of Origin- Karate is an art from Japan that dates very far back.
There are various stories as to what country Kung Fu comes from, but the most widely accepted is that it comes from China.
Style Difference-
Karate means %26quot;The way of the open-hand.%26quot; It is a straightforward style that mostly involves strikes and it can sometimes come with some entry-level grappling.
Kung Fu means %26quot;Martial Art%26quot; or %26quot;Skill.%26quot; It is used to describe the art of Chinese boxing. It encorporates a wide array of attacks, and it also has grappling as well.
I would say that Kung Fu is more %26quot;Loose%26quot; than Karate.
That isn%26#039;t the say that Karate isn%26#039;t loose, but of the 400-600 styles of it, only a select few (Freestyle and Kyokushin[Spelling? :P] Karate are good examples) deviate from the basic principles and teaching style of it.
Kung Fu has a large number styles, but the diversity of the varying styles is much more branched out than Karate.
Kung Fu/Wushu- The well known style of Chinese Boxing.
Mantis Style Kung Fu- Another style that is very different from Shaolin. There%26#039;s distinctive styles of Mantis Kung Fu as well.
Drunken Kung Fu- A style that is very different from both of the above styles. :p
Then you have the animal styles:
Crane, Wolf, Dog, Snake, Dragon, Cat, Eagle, Tiger, and there%26#039;s more! Plus many of the animal styles deviate because of the type of animal action:
Sleeping Crane, Eating Crane... :p
Ba Gua, Pi Gua, Choy Lee Fut, San Shou (The more freestyle form of Kung Fu) and the list goes on and on.
(Hypothetical Situation)
A master in Goju Ryu Karate goes to an Isshin Ryu school and is asked to do some punches, and a few basic kicks. There will be some differences, but those differences are more diverse due to different schools and not the different styles.
(Hypothetical Situation #2)
A master in Choy Lee Fut goes to a school that teahces Drunken Kung Fu. He may have to learn an entire new way of applying his techniques because the styles are much different.
In Karate, you use offense and defense to counter your opponent.
In Kung Fu, it%26#039;s more about how you adapt to your opponent than using offense or defense. You have techniques, but depending on the style, your goals are very different. In one style of Kung Fu you might be trying to knock your opponent of balance, but in another you might just be attempting to keep them away.
Both styles of Martial Arts are great in my opinion. Kung Fu may be more diverse, but it%26#039;s impossible to say that a Kung Fu Master will always beat a Karate Master.|||the most noticeable difference in kung fu and karate is that forms of karate are hard %26amp; linear while styles of kung fu tend to be circular %26amp; both hard and soft. for example someone using karate-do kyohan would be very direct in his attacks while a person using shaolin kung fu would be indirect. karate would tend to focus on hard hits + brute force and solid bodies and kung fu would focus on lighting speed and crisp techniques and fluidity of movement. both styles in a way mimic each other but have different goals in mind.|||They didnt make an aftershave called Kung Fu|||One difference is Karate is a striking art mainly focused on hand and foot techniques. Kung fu is more focused on weaponry skills. Although there are aspects of weapons and hand to hand in both the emphasis is different in both.|||The major differences as others have said, is that Karate is Japanese, and Kung-Fu is Chinese. Karate was developed by farmers to fight armoured samurai, and the weapons and fighting techniques reflect that (breaking boards, fighting with staves, nunchuku, tonfa). Kung-Fu was modelled after animals, and the weapons have no restrictions (swords, spears, monk spade).|||let%26#039;s see.....both have origins in different countries. Japan gave birth to Karate while China gave birth to kung fu (via shaolin).
The way they originated is also different. Karate (at least okinawan) was developed people who were not samurai as a way to defend themselves. This was mostly done by the peasant class (i think). It may have started out like capoeira, people sparring, but then just blossomed into an organized fighting style
SHaolin originated from 30 basic exercises invented by the monk Boddhidharma. He made them to improve the quality of health for the buddhist monks in china. The monks became so physically fit that the army picked up these exercises and used them. From here, Shaolin was built from the contributions of future monks and martial artists. One contribution to shaolin kung fu was from general Kwan. Before this, the bo staff was used and developed as a weapon art; however, Kwan took a staff and had a blade fixed on one end, creating the Kwan Dao (kwan%26#039;s knife). He was able to use it similarly to a Bo staff, but the different ceneter of gravity and cutting edge allowed for different kattas and attacks to be made.
Not all contributions are easily found or acredited to a single person because they were often made by groups of dedicated researchers.|||Karate is more of a linear art, while kung fu tends to be more circular. Most kung fu styles have some, if not mostly %26quot;soft styled%26quot; techniques. Karate is almost totally %26quot;hard styled%26quot;.|||the major difference is that karate is from japan and kung fu from china|||Historically, people on the island of Okinawa (south of Japan) got exposed to Chinese kung fu martial arts.
In kung fu forms, movements involve the use of more circular techniques, particularly with the hands.
Traditionally, practitioners of karate wear a white uniform called a gi which features the overlapping kimono-like top. Less traditional schools like those in North America will allow colored uniforms.
Overall, there鈥檚 more variety of techniques, styles, weapons and uniforms found in the Chinese kung fu systems compared to karate. However, that is not to say that one system or style of martial art is superior to another. They are just different and to the observer, it could come down to personal preference. Some prefer kung fu and some prefer karate. Some ambitious martial artists who desire a full well rounded education practice both kung fu and karate.|||Kung fu tends to be more circular and scientific. There are some harder styles of kung fu like Hung Gar. By hard I mean strength based.

Kung Fu is for combat.
Karate is Japan%26#039;s version of Wu Shu end of story.
Kenpo is for combat, this is what fathered Karate and it comes from a hard form of Shaolin Kung Fu, there is even a statue paying homage to the founder in Okinawa (sorry not a great speller of foreign words).

(Fuzhou White Crane, Monk Fist Chuan Fa, Whooping Crane, 5 Ancestors Style) Even the kata of karate are done, or were done by various family Kung Fu styles across the ocean in Fukien Province, China. (i.e. Sanchin is called Sanjan Kata in China, but Naihanchi is no longer done in China though Master Motobu Choki said it was being done as late as the early 20th century)
Many Chinese styles of Kung Fu die out (even today) because of the moral and ethical desire of Kung Fu sifu to only teach people they are 100% certain have the moral fiber to use Kung Fu responsibly.
Okinawa was under the rule of China until the mid 19th century when Satsuma Samurai removed the Chinese officials. For a time, Karate masters called their style Karatejitsu (adding the japanese jitsu to placate the Samurai)... Eventually karate masters changed the %26quot;Kara%26quot; in karate from Kara (Chinese) to %26quot;Kara,%26quot; which means empty/sky.
First is to do it yourself. In a nut-shell this can be done through various free or cheap websites for hosting and software programs (Microsoft Frontpage might be already installed on your computer, depending on what kind of MS Suite package you got). Alternatively, if you%26#039;re technical savy you can set up a dedicated computer at your house to operate as the support server where you would upload your site to, however you would only have yourself and whatever time and resources you have for technical support should something go wrong.
Another thing to remember on selecting a host is that the cheaper and sometimes free hosts will often have ways to offset their costs that will be passed on to your viewers such as pop-up and banner ads. Once you have a host you will need to check your intended domain name and if it%26#039;s available register for it. Once your domain name is secured you can go about creating your website. After your website is created you then would need to register it with various search engines such as Yahoo and Google to ensure it comes up in their searches. Finally once that is all done you can upload it onto the server and go live with your website.
Or the second way (and the way I would recommend) would be to contact a local IT company and have them do it all for you. Granted you might pay a little more out of pocket upfront to get it going and a little more per month (I think the average I found when checking with the mom %26amp; pop IT companies around me came out to about $20/month hosting), but you%26#039;ll probably end up with a much more professional looking site and have someone who will be responsible for creating and maintaining the site, leaving you more time to run your school.|||You could make Yahoo Geocities. Is Aikido more effective than Karate in a street fight?
It probably depends on the practitioner - but one martial art might be better suited for street combat than the other. Your thoughts?|||I have done both and I have to say that Aikido takes a lot longer to get good at. So at least at the pre-black belt level and probably pre-sandan (3rd degree) black belt Karate is more practical for street fight.
Still Aikido has many benefits as a second art for Karateka. Namely it will help you with Bunkai, circular movements, and the joint locks are also helpful and fun.
As too the ignorant comment about Karate not practicing against moving targets, dude you either don%26#039;t know what you are talking about or have only seen %26quot;Karate%26quot; practiced at some McDojo.
REAL Karate practices against moving and fully resisting apponent(s), usually with full contact.|||I find that neither Karate nor Aikido are effective in a street fight. The reason for this is like asking if european style boxing or Chinese boxing is better to help you swim. The reality comes down to one how well versed that person is in their chosen disciple and two how able are they to apply their chosen disciple to an ever changing terrain, situation and other real world environmental changes. If and only if this is possible then any art martial or otherwise can be used in a street fight were their are no rules.
Just think of if one is versed in the use and application of both Sun Tzu%26#039;s Art of War and never went in to a dojo, dojan, Quando or gym could that person be more effective in understanding how to fight than a person that goes to a class two times a week for a year? Does that person who not only thinks tactically verse someone who thinks strategically at more advantaged than a person in a random situation of violent crime? The question should not be as to what style is more suited for combat but which would aid them in to avoiding said conflict, and why?|||This has no answer. Martial arts are nothing without someone to practice them. Naturally these practitioners will be of different skill levels. They will also hold different beliefs that may or may not help them in street combat. If I was to say Wushu is better then Ninjitsu, but nobody practiced either art then neither could win.
In street combat the victor is determined by a few things:
1.) numbers - 15 on 1 is not fair, that is why it works so well.
2.) Weapons - The solution to numbers is weapons. 15 people verses 1 person will lose to the one person crazy enough to carry a hand grenade.
3.) Surprise - the solution to weapons. If a person with an AK-47 doesn%26#039;t know they are being assassinated then naturally they will lose the fight.
please note that all of the above is very overboard to make my point as clear as possible. If you want to win a street fight there is only one rule. CHEAT!
Hails to the truth,
Silence|||As katana pointed out, you answered your own question.
The practitioner is what matters, plain and simple.
But, just to add fuel to the fire, I cannot help but say my own opinion.
Aikido is an art that was designed by a master at the height of his experience and skill and then they expect normal students to be able to achieve his level... with all the ki and the harmonizing with the opponent ideals... but it just doesn%26#039;t happen that way... so, unless the Aikido practitioner is extremely skilled, or the karate ka is extremely inept, I would wager on the Karate person every time.|||You answered your own question. It is entirely up to the person and how well and realisticly they have trained what they know. Karate(Many different styles) and Akido can both be very effective for self defense, but without the training and knowledge behind them, they are just dances that look cool.
I should not be amazed anymore at the level of ignorence by many who respond to questions anymore.|||karate is typically less effective in my experience, as the few karate sensei/instructors ive seen have never put alot of emphasis on your opponent as a moving target, rather than simply teaching a punch a kick and blocks
aikido would probably be more effective as it anticipates someone attacking you, and would develop your ability to respond to an attack such as a punch or a kick specifically
aikido is not meant for attacking someone but is an excellent art for defending yourself in realworld scenarios like street fights/combat like youre talking about|||I%26#039;ve been practicing Hung Gar Gung Fu, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Tai Chi Chuan, and Seven Star Praying Mantis for 31 years. The Hung Gar system practices joint locks, throws, strikes, kicks, elbows, knees, many weapons, along with many other things. One thing I can say with my experience as a full contact fighter is, it is very difficult to handle and full speed strike from a experience attacker and do some type of joint lock and throw. I have a very high ranking friend in the Aikido style that I consider to be very good. However, when it comes time to stop a full speed combination of strikes I always have the upper hand. Also, he can%26#039;t handle my Jiu-Jitsu. Once grabbed he is in big trouble. My opinion is that Aikido is a great art however you need to compliment it with something else. Thanks =) Sifu Chris|||In present aikido has been shwn at movise af steaven seagal. As you balance aikido and karate, aikido can defend himself a little, he can attack but not much power to hit the enemy. well Karate is best in streetfight.|||I%26#039;ve done both -I would say that Karate would be more useful. Just because the training itself has been more practical in Karate-in Aikido, the practicality of the techniques%26#039; application was somewhat limited, or at least less realistic.|||It really does depend on the practitioner. No such thing as %26quot;better%26quot; when it comes to defense. Either you know it well enough to apply it, or not. Both are equal when it comes to defensive tactics.|||it depends on the practioner but in saying that ive done both and am currently doing akido and tkd(again) and i would say karate has been of more use to me personally.|||i would say karate is better for a street fight cause you will learn how to block but also attack wich is the flip side to karate wich people dont understand|||aikido is more effective if its more originally learned because it carrys karate movements too like u can see bruce lee|||First of all Aikido is not a fighting art, and you do not even need a martial art to attack and injure the toughest enemy. What you need is to train hard and be tough and be confident, that%26#039;s it to attack. Neither Aikido nor Karate are suited for a street fight, nor is any martial art that caannot counter weapons. If you are in either Aikido or Karate ask the sensei what he would do against a MMA using everything that is illegal in a contest against him, what he would do? That means fish hooking, biting, eye gouges, strikes to the neck and throat, neck twisting and breaks, breaking small joints, kicks to the testicles etc. He might tell you his enourmus storage of Ki would allow him to turn into Superman or some other fantasy, but the truth of reality is most Aikido instructors themselves would not be able to defend themselves against the average person armed with a weapon such as a knife and doing all those illegal things to them, let alone against a qualified instructor (Guro) trained in FMA using a weapon. Neither would 99% of other martial arts instructors. You have to realize that most fights that go to the ground you have a chance of dieing, so stay on your feet and watch your back. Wepons rule in the street. Always have and always will. Also, the element of surprise. If you don%26#039;t know how to defend against the element of surprise guess what happens? When you feel fear (unless it is imaginary) it is a warning to leave if possible and be able and willing to kill if need be to survive. Self defense isn%26#039;t about seeing who is toughest. Tell the bully types, %26quot;more power to them,%26quot; or %26quot;I am too busy,%26quot; and walk away. Don%26#039;t follow someone or be taken anywhere against your will. Refuse. It can be an ambush or worse. Muay Thai is being used now in the MMA because it is proven effective as a sport, but it is also good because you can remain on your feet in a real fight too using strikes and Muay Thai kicks. Closed fist strikes to the face are not a good idea due to the possibility of getting their blood into a cut or wound. Empty hand fighting is or should be a last resort.
Still Aikido has many benefits as a second art for Karateka. Namely it will help you with Bunkai, circular movements, and the joint locks are also helpful and fun.

Check my website, Chinesemartialartsacademy.com
Is it Awkward for a 13 yr old to Take Beginner Karate Lessons?
I know someone in that situation and they asked me what I thought. I had some trouble, too so I thought I would put it here. What do you think?|||No it isn%26#039;t, or shouldn%26#039;t be. The instructor knows you are a beginner as well as the other students. They will help you improve your art. Don%26#039;t worry, everyone starts out with bad form. You will get better
Good Luck|||That age is an awkward age for many and so that along with the approach that the instructor takes can sometimes make it more difficult. That is especially true if the person was not very athletic as a child and never participated in any organized sports or activities. Those types of students are growing fast and sometimes temporarily outgrow what little flexibility, balance, and cordination that they had. This coupled with being in a class in what some feel are jammies, not being able to do anything particularly well, lost and not knowing how to do the things that the rest of the class is doing can be very frustrating and awkward. For this reason I always start students off in a mini class first so that they are with other beginners just starting out. I also explain to them it is like learning how to walk or ride a bike and that they probably fell a few times when they first tried to do that. With time, effort on their part, and practice they will be able to eventually do it. That coupled with them being in their own group to start with usually is sufficient in helping them transition into being comfortable and able to focus and concentrate better and put in better effort. At the same time when they start in regular class all my novice students (White-Orange) know and are encouraged to display the proper attitude towards them and encourage them to keep trying, keep working, and eventually they will be able to do it. That is probably the best thing you can do for such a student rather than laugh at, or belittle their lack of skill and ability. A student who is just starting out is very fragile and a word of encouragement here and a little praise there can make a student just as a negative reaction or inconsiderate comment can break a student and cause them to quit. Everyone was a beginner once-even old black-belts like me.|||It%26#039;s a great time to get the kid involved. It will teach them discipline, focus, self defense, and confidence. Also,it will take them off the streets avoiding idle time. And a whole lot better than t.v and video games.|||yes. try talking it in private|||No I started at 12 and I%26#039;m 16 now and still loving it. My parents forbid me to study in a karate school, so I have to study it on my own. The reason why I studied karate is to learn self defense. I decided to learn Jeet Kune Do instead because it offers Self Defense Techniques and combat moves. About your question my reason is that anyone can learn karate regardless of his/her age. I have seen Karatekas that are not yet 13 and are learning karate.

Could a good street fighter who has no training in martial arts beat a jiu jitsu or karate expert in a fight?
I am thinking about doing mma, and might take jiu jitsu. I kknow some good street fighters who might not need training to beat some of those people i see on tv; although i know martial arts are eloquent and ideal, they can be beat.|||A streetfighter is somebody who has fought to learn what he knows.
A Jiu jiusu or karate expert has trained to learn a combat system.
Either one can win, depending on the amount of training, dedication, skill, and phisical ability it could improve the odds.
good luck!|||Techniques and styles are only a couple of aspects of fighting. Agility, reflexes, strength, and inginuity must also be taken into account. A good fighter, regardless of training has a high skill level in all of these and can adjust easily to surroundings and situations. It%26#039;s definitely possible for a street fighter to be able to beat someone with martial arts training, if he or she has enough skill.
